Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are currently an issue of concern worldwide because of the risks and consequences they bring. This is the main reason why climate change is becoming more and more serious, causing global warming, melting ice caps, floods, and droughts, affecting the production and business processes of enterprises.

Measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are introduced to create harmony and minimize negative impacts on the environment, while ensuring sustainable socio-economic development.

In Vietnam, we are aiming for the national development goal in the period 2021-2030 as well as the goal of the National Strategy on Climate Change for the period up to 2050. This has motivated businesses to carry out innovations to adapt to the general situation, thereby demonstrating its responsibility to the environment and society in general in addition to personal benefits.

What are greenhouse gas emissions? What is the cause?

What are greenhouse gasses?

Greenhouse gasses are understood as gasses that have the ability to absorb infrared wavelengths (long-wave radiation) due to sunlight reflected from the Earth's surface. When sunlight shines on the Earth's surface, it will also disperse heat back to the Earth, causing the greenhouse effect.

Greenhouse gasses mainly include: CO2, N2O, O3, CH4, water vapor and CFC gasses. Not only on Earth, greenhouse gasses also exist in the atmospheres of Venus, Mars and Titan.

It is a fact that greenhouse gasses do not always have a negative impact on the Earth. Thanks to them, the Earth's surface became warm and created life like it does today. Without them, the Earth's surface would average about 33 degrees Celsius (59 °F) colder than it does now. However, excessive greenhouse gas emissions will cause too much heat to be trapped, causing the Earth to warm up and causing many unfortunate consequences.

Cause of greenhouse gasses

Currently, the causes of greenhouse gas emissions are classified based on their origin, trend, absolute level and level of impact on the total greenhouse gas emission potential of countries.

If we consider the source of greenhouse gas emissions, we will have 4 main groups as follows:

Energy

It is currently the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, contributing 90% of CO2 and 75% of other greenhouse gasses in developing countries. Emissions in the energy sector are divided into three groups:

  • Emissions from burning fossil fuels in transportation, energy industries, etc.

  • Fugitive emissions from leaking equipment, extraction, transportation, and processing of materials.

  • Emissions from carbon capture and storage activities.

Industrial Processes and Product Use (IPPU)

This is a source of greenhouse gas emissions from the use of carbon in fossil fuels not intended for energy production. The primary sources of emissions come from industrial processes that chemically or physically transform materials. The main greenhouse gases produced include: CH4, CO2, N2O, HFCs, and PFCs.

Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use (AFOLU)

This is a source of greenhouse gas emissions contributing 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions. This includes CO2 from land use and deforestation, and N2O, CH4 from cultivation and livestock activities.

Waste

The main gasses generated include: CO2, CH4, and N2O. Primary sources of emissions:

  • Landfilling of solid waste

  • Biological treatment of solid waste

  • Incineration and open burning of waste

  • Wastewater treatment and discharge

The impact of greenhouse gasses on the earth

Climate change is causing serious impacts on Earth, causing average temperatures to gradually increase, causing ice to melt at the poles. The consequence of this is rising sea levels, threatening to submerge coastal and low-lying areas. Thousands of kilometers of coastline in Vietnam are also facing this situation.

Melting ice causes sea levels to rise, which is the impact of greenhouse gasses on the earth

Not only is there a problem with sea water, the number of deaths due to high temperatures is also increasing rapidly. Prolonged heat waves cause serious impacts on human health. They create conditions for forest fires to break out and cause a significant number of deaths. This is becoming a major global challenge, and we need to act now to minimize the impact of climate change.
