Greenhouse gas emissions (GHG)

Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG) - MinMax Green

Greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) are currently a focus of global concern owing to the risks and detrimental consequences they entail. They are a principal cause propelling the increasingly severe progression of climate change, leading to a rise in global temperatures, glacial melting, floods, droughts, and impacting the production and business operations of enterprises.

Measures to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions are being implemented to foster environmental harmony and minimize adverse impacts, while simultaneously ensuring sustainable socio-economic development.

In Vietnam, we are steering towards national development goals for the period of 2021-2030, as well as the strategic objectives for climate change outlined to be achieved by 2050. This impetus is prompting businesses to innovate and adapt to the general situation, thereby fulfilling their responsibilities towards the environment and society at large, beyond their own interests.

What are greenhouse gas emissions? What is the cause?

What Are Greenhouse Gases?

Greenhouse gases are gases capable of absorbing infrared wavelengths (long-wave radiation) that are reflected by the Earth's surface from the sun's rays. When sunlight strikes the Earth, it also disperses heat back to the planet, creating the greenhouse effect.

The primary greenhouse gases include CO2, N2O, O3, CH4, water vapor, and various CFCs.

Not confined to Earth, greenhouse gases also exist in the atmospheres of Venus, Mars, and Titan. It is a fact that greenhouse gases do not always have adverse effects on Earth. Thanks to these gases, the Earth's surface is warm enough to support life as we know it today. Without them, the average temperature of the Earth's surface would be about 33 degrees Celsius (59 °F) colder. However, excessive emissions of greenhouse gases entrap an overabundance of heat, leading to global warming and precipitating numerous regrettable consequences.

Causes of Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Currently, the causes of greenhouse gas emissions are categorized based on their sources, trends, absolute levels, and impact on a nation's overall greenhouse gas emission potential. If we consider the sources of greenhouse gas emissions, we find four main groups as follows:

Energy

Emissions in this sector are divided into three groups:

• Emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels in transportation, the energy industry, etc.

• Instantaneous emissions due to leaks from compressors, and during the extraction, transportation, and processing of raw materials.

• Emissions from carbon capture and storage activities.

Industrial Process and Product Use (IPPU)

This source contributes to 30% of the global greenhouse gas emissions, stemming from CO2 released during land use changes and deforestation, as well as from N2O and CH4 generated in the processes of agriculture and animal husbandry.

The Effects of Greenhouse Gases on the Earth

Climate change is exerting severe impacts on our planet, causing a gradual increase in average temperatures which leads to the melting of polar ice. The consequence of this phenomenon is the rising of sea levels, threatening to submerge coastal and low-lying areas. Many kilometers of coastline in Vietnam are currently facing this predicament.

Melting ice causes sea levels to rise, which is the impact of greenhouse gases on the earth

Beyond the issue of rising seas, the number of fatalities due to high temperatures is also rapidly increasing. Prolonged heatwaves cause serious health impacts on humans. They create conditions conducive to the outbreak of wildfires resulting in significant loss of life. This is becoming a substantial challenge globally, and immediate action is required to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
